American Science Daily website published in May 25 entitled "the use of wind solar hybrid renewable energy outdoor lighting" reported that, as a result of the ongoing hybrid renewable energy, an innovative with enhanced shield wind turbines and solar panels for outdoor lighting system was installed in the campus of University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur.
This hybrid green energy system has the advantages of compact design, it is with a novel omnidirectional guide vane (ODGV) vertical axis wind turbine generator (VAWT), solar panels and light emitting diode (LED) lighting system harmony.
The ODGV incorporates a number of guide vanes, which are carefully designed and installed to surround the VAWT for wind power enhancement via ODGV guidance of the intake. This results in a Venturi effect, which increases the airflow before interacting with the turbine blades.
In addition, the unique ODGV design for the shroud of the wind turbine rotor will provide a safer and more reliable environment for the maintenance workers and the public. Eventually, the ODGV design overcame the problem of low wind speed in the tropics. Before the airflow entered the central part of the VAWT, the vanes were used to increase the wind speed in all directions. To make use of solar energy, a piece of solar photovoltaic panel is installed on the top surface of ODGV to generate solar energy. The green energy generated by the wind solar hybrid system is used to power outdoor lighting systems.
The research team led by Zhang Wentong won the "quasi commercialization prototype fund" offered by University of Malaya for developing the technology and installing the product in the right place on campus. The product's name is "eco green energy" wind solar outdoor lighting system".
